What is Veterans Day and why?

Veterans Day has its origins at the end of World War I when at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918

the fighting ended with the signing of an armistice. U.S. Soldiers celebrate the armistice that ended World War I, Nov. 11, 1918.

Is Veterans Day for all military?

Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans, while Memorial Day honors those who have died while in military service.

Another military holiday that also occurs in May, Armed Forces Day, honors those currently serving in the U.S. military.

What is the history of Veterans Day?

The first celebration using the term Veterans Day occurred in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1947. Raymond Weeks, a World War II veteran, organized "National Veterans Day," 

which included a parade and other festivities, to honor all veterans. The event was held on November 11, then designated Armistice Day.

Who do you honor on Veterans Day?

While those who died are also remembered, Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALLthose who served honorably in the military - in wartime or peacetime.

How do you respectfully celebrate Veterans Day?

Celebrate with service. Show service members your gratitude throughout the year with a home-cooked meal, thank you note or day of volunteering.

Support veteran-owned businesses. It's not always easy to identify which businesses are founded or operated by veterans  Express thanks. Send a card.

What flower is a symbol of Veterans Day? Poppies

On September 27, 1920, the poppy became the official flower of The American Legion family to memorialize the soldiers who fought and died during the war.

Support veteran-owned businesses. It's not always easy to identify which businesses are founded or operated by veterans.

In 1924, the distribution of poppies became a national program of The American Legion.

What colors do people wear on Veterans Day?

The simple gesture of wearing patriotic colors can pay tribute. It'll also create conversation among peers and give you an opportunity to remind everyone that it's Veterans Day.

When Veterans Day falls on a Saturday then either Saturday or the preceding Friday may be designated as the holiday,

whereas if it falls on a Sunday it is typically observed on the following Monday. When it falls on the weekend many private companies offer it as a floating holiday where employees can choose some other day.
